People have asked me “ya .. it’s great that you can get links from other bloggers, but what if my company doesn’t have a blog and I want to increase the number of links to my website?”
Well, the first thing I tell them is that their companies are behind the times because blogging is a great new communication tool all businesses should incorporate into their web presence plan. After that, I tell them that it’s not very difficult to get links for their websites as long as they are willing to do the work and follow these 10 Simple Steps:
Step 1) Do a Search for Keywords you would like to rank for then run the “link:www.domainname.com” command in the Google Search Engine (like the one at Google Shadow) to find how many links it’s going to take you to get where you want on the search engine results.
Step 2) Do the same link command for your main competitors to know where they are getting their links.
Step 3) Research your industry and find Business Directories that you can add your site too. Remember that you shouldn’t submit your site to any search engines or directories until your site is done.
Step 4) Make a list of Sites that you want to contact, prioritized based on the quality of traffic the site can bring to your site.
Step 5) Do a Search for “Add Your URL” or “Submit Your Site” . . . Don’t forget to use the Quotation Marks to make sure you tell the search engines to look for that exact phrase. Add these sites to your list of “Sites to Contact” when your site is ready to go.
Step 6) Put together an email to user to contact all the sites you would like to obtain a link from. If you’re willing to exchange links, then indicate so in your email as this might make it easier for your cause. Start sending out those emails.
Step 7) Prepare your Page Title, Description and Contact Information for those sites that ask for that information. Make sure to remember to have a Call to Action keyphrase in your description - i.e. Click Here to. . . and also remember to setup a separate email address for people to contact you as many sites will post your email on their site where spammers can find them.

Check your email box for responses from sites that have agreed to post your link on their site. Usually, the first response will start the negotiations process for reciprocal links or link locations.
Step 9) Go through your lists and check off who has responded and who hasn’t. Some times webmasters from other sites don’t want to link to brand new sites until they see that you really are building a quality site.
Step 10) After 2 months, go ahead and contact those sites that never responded or denied a link before. Hopefully by now, your site is up and running and they will be more forthcoming in linking to your site.

I find it very helpful when you blog about your consulting experience and what you’re doing to better the companies you work with.
PS: I really hate that Jane’s face pops up when I leave comments, but I guess that’s one of the flaws of MBL. O well, maybe I just shouldn’t include the CR url when commenting.
Corporate blogs are a MUST these days, and can be such a great traffic builder for your product web site.
Hey Gary - great tips! One thing I might mention is that instead of using a call to action such as “click here…” the actual link back to one’s site should be some desired anchor text instead. Great post!
