25 Random Things: New Facebook Phenomenom is Old in Blogging

    25 Random Things

I’m sure a lot of you have been getting tagged in your facebook accounts from friends who have just revealed 25 random things about themselves and would like for you to do the same. I’ve been trying my best to resist, since I rather just write for my blog than some notes section in my facebook. Then came the forehead smack – My facebook notes is tied to my RSS feed of this blog, so anything I put on here goes on facebook anyways.

So, here you go . . . .Check below to see who I’m going to tag in the blogging world:

Once you’ve been tagged, you are supposed to write a note with 25 random things, facts, habits, or goals about you. At the end, choose 25 people to be tagged. You have to tag the person who tagged you. If I tagged you, it’s because I want to know more about you.

(To do this, go to “notes” under tabs on your profile page. If you don’t see “notes” you’ll need to add it by clicking on the “+” sign and add “notes.” Paste these instructions in the body of the note, type your 25 random things, tag 25 people (in the right hand corner of the app) then click publish.)

    1. I believe in Ghosts, but don’t think they’re all bad. This probably is a result of growing up with Casper and Ghostbusters.
    2. I watched Titanic 7 times in the movie theatres, but not on purpose. This is really hard to explain, so I’m not going to try.
    3. I believe having over 10+ dogs in my life has given me committment issues.
    4. As competitive as I am, I’m glad I’m not a sore loser . . . . I think.
    5. With that being said, I’ve broken golf clubs over my knee.
    6. I have the memory of an elephant and probably the thighs of one, too.
    7. I was raised in an italian household as a baby for a few years.
    8. I am amazed and proud of my friends accomplisments every day.
    9. My first concert was a New Edition Concert at the Arrowhead Pond where I was drugged by secondhand smoke of some sort, which led to hallucinations on the drive back home.
    10. I’ve been on a one week road trip from LA to Chicago and Back, so that I could attend summer school in time.
    11. I think about my funeral and wonder who would give my eulogy.
    12. I don’t think I have a best friend, but I have a good idea of who my groomsmen would be.
    13. Some of my closest friends are the ones I speak to only a few times a year.
    14. I love thinking outside of the box and throwing out ideas, even if they suck.
    15. I only played volleyball in High School.
    16. I’ve been hit by a truck on a freeway while riding my motorcycle and didn’t break a bone, but broke down when I told my sister.
    17. I’m the oldest for those of you who think otherwise.
    18. I didn’t vote in the 08 elections.
    19. I went to a new school in 2nd grade and spent recesses alone in the corner all year.
    20. I learn better by visualization.
    21. I don’t like fortune tellers because the last one told me my life would suck.
    22. I like Star Trek more than Star Wars.
    23. I feel I was cheated out of Honors English in High School.
    24. I need at least 7 hours of sleep or you’ll notice.
    25. I’m only 5 lbs heavier than I was in 8th grade.

Suze Orman Misses Her Chance with Oprah

The recession is hitting everyone hard, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any opportunities to take advantage of. Case in point, Suze Orman scored a feature on Oprah’s Website to showcase her new e-book called 2009 Action Plan. It’s a free download until January 15, but the reason I said Suze missed her chance is because of the fact that she forgot to put any kind of links in her e-book. Those links could have:

    • sent traffic back to her site
    • help her sell some of her other books
    • give her an opportunity to track how many people are reading her book

Suze might be great at keeping money and sound, but she’s obviously lacking in knowing how to make money online.

I had a client that needed an ecommerce site created in 2 days for a book they would be promoting on oprah.

I stayed up for 2 days to complete it and he never memtioned the site on the show. We got 5 orders, the rest went though Amazon. Don’t remember, but I think he was not allowed to plug the site.

      @Natron
Ya . . most likely they have some rules about linking from the site, but not from the e-book. The potential was there.

Lessons learned from 08 for 2009

meditationRemember when everyone was looking forward to 2008 because of they myth behind the lucky number 8?All the resolutions, hopes, promises and expectations?

I started off the year living in a new west side culture of Santa Monica ready to start a new sem consulting business. We had a plan to build our client list and give ourselves a solid foundation for us to work on our own projects such as PinkDeals.net. A combination of active and passive income was the plan that would make us rich! We’d live the entrepreneurial life of late mornings and and even later nights chatting away with other bloggers we’ve met over the years. Working when we want and how we want with no one to tell us what to do. 08 was gonna be great!

Next thing I know, I’m back in corporate america working for a company that I just couldn’t pass up. Being young and single, I had a real problem leaving “money on the table.” If there was a project that could be done, a job that I could take and a new client that could be signed, then I was all over it. One of the best pieces of advice that was given to me when I was in my early 20′s was not to waste my time lounging on a couch, watch tv and becoming a zombie. So, along with my 40 hour a week job, I was doing consulting on the side along with building and running my own businesses. I thought I could do it, but I was wrong.

As the year went on, the economy was just getting worse. Rising gas prices and then the market crash just sent signals that major decisions needed to be made in my life if I was going to survive this turbulent future. Bearing down and understanding what gave me the best return on my time invested was what I needed to concentrate on.

The 9-5 job was going great, so that’s checked. I learned that I do like a 9-5 job with the hustle and bustle of fire drills and working with a team. One thing aspiring entrepreneurials don’t really talk about is the lack of social interaction during the day. Some people need it and some people don’t. I think you should really look at yourself in the mirror and think about what work environment you work best in.

Consulting – The biggest lesson I learned was to do a better job interviewing the client and seeing if they’re going to be the type to demand more than what they’re paying for. No matter how much you get paid, once one of the parties feels that they’re getting taken advantage of, it’s the beginning of the end. At the end of the day, I realized that I needed to optimize my client list so that everyone at the table was happy.

Projects – Forget about bartering services. Just pay for what you want. It gets done faster and you don’t have to worry about hurting anyone’s feelings. I promise you that you’re going to save yourself a lot of heartache at the end of the day.

Blogging – well, I’m writing, aren’t I? 2008 saw a big time decline in the amount of posts that I came out with. One of my 2009 resolutions is to make up for that lost time and to try and pump out focuses content, which can clearly be seen by the significant reduction in categories. I’ve also spent the last couple of days redesigning my blog with a large of the inspiration coming from one of my favorite blogs out there - DoshDosh.com

Working with Others – Everyone has a role and you need to build a team where you fill each role. The great teams are the ones where people not only know their roles, but when there is something missing, they’re able to adapt and help fill in that hole. If it’s not working on for you and someone else, then it’s best that you end amicably and wish each other the best of luck.

Education – I can honestly say that I didn’t learn as much in 2008 as I did in the previous years. With everything that was going on, I was using my existing knowledge to get by. Talking with my peers from around the world, I know in my gut that I was missing out on what was going on in the industry. I’m going to do my best to catch up and get back out there on the cutting edge of internet marketing. Also, one thing that this economic situation has taught me is to not put all my eggs in this internet marketing basket. With that being said, I’m going to explore other facets of marketing, both online and offline so if things were to get worse, I am better armed to face the challenges.

Words to live by - “Reach for the stars, but keep your feet on the ground!” – Theodore Roosevelt

What were your expectations for 2008?

What lessons did you learn in 2008?

How are you preparing for the upcoming economic conditions?

How do you like the new design and look of the site?

Working with time was the toughest thing for me… The balance of new startups vs. putting bread on the table isn’t easy unless you have rich parents etc. But overall I think I learned and grew a lot in 08, and 09 will be a much better year for us.

Nice post. Managing time was definitely a challenge in 2008. Don’t you think that what separates the big dogs from the puppies is the ability to get things done in the time we are allotted with?

    • Gary Lee 11.47 am on 07.01.2009 Permalink

I think the main thing that separates the big dogs from the puppies is that the big dogs really focus and do well on their main projects which give them the time and network to become these big dogs. Look at Chow . .he had TTZ which helped him build his huge blog. Look at Shoemoney . . he made it big in PPC before he became a big dog in blogging.

Convincing Lebron to Come to LA

Lebron Waiting for Kobe!Thought I’d share my comment from one of my favorite blogs – Dime Magazine

The Pitch: Who Wants the King?

    Your Legacy! Your World!

Goal: To become a global icon and cement your legacy as the greatest basketball player ever!

How: Sign with the 2010 Los Angeles Lakers

    Why:

Kobe Bryant will be entering the twilight of his career. He’s already showing that he doesn’t care about the stats by taking 33 minutes a game right now. Imagine what a couple of more championships will do to him. The Lakers will need someone to carry the superstar torch.

Supporting cast will be second to none. The Lakers will still have the twin towers under contract and in place with Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum anchoring the posts. A small, quick guard in Jordan Farmar. A defensive specialist and perfect role player in Trevor Ariza. Everyone’s young and ready to go for a dynasty run. By the way, we also have the greatest coach in NBA history sitting on our bench.

Global Icon time. You know it as well as the rest of the world. Asia is the future. The only reason NYC has gained it’s global status is because of it’s enormous ties to europe with it’s european ties there. If you want to dominate the world, you’ll have to come to where Asia and the United States meet – Los Angeles! With the largest population of Asian Americans in the US residing here and millions flying back and forth from here to Asia, there’s no way NYC will give you the accessibility to 3 Billion people (India & China) the way Los Angeles would be able to.

Los Angeles Lifestyle – It’s always 70 degrees and 30% humidity here. We get earthquakes once a year at MOST and they’re not even that bad. The fires and mudslides only effect a few people. Just buy in a smart location and you’ll be fine. There’s celebrities galore out here so you won’t be mobbed everywhere you go. We know how to respect people’s spaces. Oh, and the most beautiful people are in LA. Sorry NYC, you can’t compete on that.

Legacy time – Elgin Baylor, Wilt Chamberlin, Jerry West, Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant. All of these guys easily crack the Top 15 players of all time and a big reason is because they were part of a great franchise. This is the franchise with the highest winning percentage in league HISTORY. We’ve reached the finals more times than any other NBA team. We’ve won a trophy in every decade the NBA has existed. Dr. Buss has created an atmosphere of excellence and will take the chances necessary to win.

Lebron – the question is posed to you – you can see how serious LA is about winning, now can we see how serious you are?

LA is yours for the taking!

    • Jeff 4.36 pm on 25.11.2008 Permalink

I wouldn’t put Kobe in the NBA top 15 of all time. That is a stretch.

    • Gary Lee 4.56 pm on 25.11.2008 Permalink

Sorry Jeff . . . but you’re going to have to name 15 players better than Kobe to try and convince me on this :)

    5 Reasons Why $5 Gas Doesn’t Suck

With the price of a barrel of oil reaching $143 as I write this post, I’m reminded of the constant whining and moaning the mass media and general population are doing about having to spend so much on gas! I’m not gonna lie, I bitched and moaned about it all weekend as I drove a total of 350 some-odd miles, but then I realized that it’s really not that bad at all. It could be a true “blessing in disguise!”

So, these are my 5 Reasons why $5 Gas doesn’t suck as bad as we think!

gogreen.jpg1) $5 Gas is Environmentally Friendly – All those tree-huggers must love what’s going on as their wishes of less cars, more carpooling and an overall smaller carbon footprint per person is coming true. By the way, find out your carbon footprint here with this widget I found!

Walking2) $5 Gas Helps Us Lose Weight – It looks like $5 gas is starting to make people realize that walking a few blocks to the market isn’t really that bad. More and more people are  either walking or riding their bike to help them get around. We haven’t seen this much calorie burning since the caveman days when we had to hunt and gather our own food!!!

Subway3) $5 Gas Makes Us More Social – More and more cars are being left in the garage in favor of carpooling, trains and subways. It’s a great opportunity for you to meet new people and helps us realize that “hey, people aren’t as crazy and senile as I see on the news!”

No Traffic4) $5 Gas Makes for Less Traffic Jams – With less people wanting to drive, there are going to be less cars on the road. Less cars means less traffic. I hope to gain at least ONE day back from the 2 weeks I lose sitting in traffic every day!

Neighbors5) $5 Gas Improves Local Economy – I’m assuming most of us live in neighborhoods where we can walk down to the local farmer’s market or local restaurant for a night of entertainment. We can probably discover new neighborhood events going on like outdoor movies in the park. Bottom line, we’re not going to be venturing too far away from home anymore, so why not enjoy where we live?

Anything else you can think of? Feel free to comment below and let us know!

Also, don’t forget to check out this great LA Times article “Envisioning a World of $200 a Barrel Oil

    • Michael Kwan 10.11 am on 01.07.2008 Permalink

The other reason why $5/gallon for gas doesn’t suck is because it’s over $1.50 a litre here in Vancouver. For those of you keeping score at home, that works out to over $6 a gallon.

    • Zac Johnson 10.44 am on 01.07.2008 Permalink

I’m sure $5 gas doesn’t suck if you are a big investor in the oil and gas companies… they continue to push higher numbers than ever. $5 a gallon gas sucks for everyone owning a hummer though :P

    • Jon Lee 2.08 pm on 01.07.2008 Permalink

I’ve heard (not sure if it’s true), that the manufacturing of the parts that make up a hybrid cars actually pollutes MORE than how environmentally friendly it is to drive. But with gas at $5 a gallon, these things are only going to get more popular.

    • Hannes Johnson 2.39 pm on 01.07.2008 Permalink

Interesting points… yeah, it’s not all bad that gas is so expensive.

Over here in Iceland it’s about 176 ISK per litre – which is about $8.45 USD per gallon – if I got the calculations right ;)

    • Cole 12.12 pm on 02.07.2008 Permalink

You have a good point – for those who are willing to relinquish the “freedom” of driving, there are benefits. I’ve never driven myself so I’m relatively unfazed. Still, it’s a lot less convenient and timely to walk someplace, especially with an armfull of veggies and I don’t know of anyone – besides you – who actually lives within walking distance from the farmer’s market.

    • Digitalnomad 3.00 pm on 02.07.2008 Permalink

Time to get off the hydrocarbons. The only good reason is it will force us to finally find alternatives for energy.

    • Gary Lee 3.59 pm on 02.07.2008 Permalink

I remembered when someone from england told me they were paying $5 a gallon a few years ago and I was like . . . man, I can’t imagine paying that much. I’d just walk everyone if that happened. . . . being an american, I guess I never realized how much the rest of the world has suffered with these kind of prices!

    • Gary Lee 4.01 pm on 02.07.2008 Permalink

i bet that’s a rumor big oil companies leaked out ;)

    • Czar 7.01 am on 03.07.2008 Permalink

Reading this post made me realize that the ongoing crisis on petroleum prices has benefits too. You’ve really got the brilliant points.

If only most people think the way you do…

In the UK it is the equivalent of $10 per galon… sparked a few “fuel protests”.

20 Ways to Pay it Forward Offline

Pay It ForwardEver since I’ve started this blog, I’ve always had this dream to do something that will affect the world in a positive manner. Last year, I came up with a pretty diabolical link train that I think Google still hates me for. It was insanely popular and I still see links come in from stragglers who just learned of the train last week so I know how huge something can get if everything is lined up correctly. I also just saw a rerun of “Pay It Forward” last weekend and thought it’d be nice to try the same idea on the internet. I’m sure this has probably been done here and there, but this train won’t ask for anything crazy. One tiny gesture of kindness can go a long way so I want to see how kind we all can be offline.

Here’s a list of 20 things I thought would cover most nice gestures, just in case you evil people out there forget what your heart felt like :) .

      • Write a Letter to an Old Person – Yes, a letter with a pen, paper, stamp and envelope. For you young whipper snappers who don’t what I’m talking about, google it. I know “Old Person” is a pretty relatively term, so think of someone your grandparents age. If that’s too old, then write to a friend you haven’t spoken to in over 10 years.
        • Teach someone younger than you how to do something new – i.e. fishing, changing the oil, dicing an onion, riding a bike, etc.
          • Call someone who’s sick and make them smile.
            • Go through your closet and find 3 nice peices of clothing you don’t wear anymore and donate them to a local clothing drive.
              • Talk to the shyest person you know.
                • Let someone ahead of you in line.
                  • Fix something for someone.
                    • Do something nice for someone and don’t let them know that it was you who did it.
                      • Read a story to a small child.
                        • Pay the Toll/Parking for the car in back of you.
                          • Stick up for someone.
                            • Plant a tree.
                              • Donate Blood.
                                • Volunteer at the local homeless shelter.
                                  • Tell the manager of a restaurant how great your waiter/waitress was.
                                    • Pull over and help someone that’s stranded on the side of the road.
                                      • Return the grocery cart for someone at the supermarket.
                                        • Buy a book for a child.
                                          • Give up your restaurant table to an elderly couple.
                                            • Offer to babysit your friend’s children.

So, this is how it’s going to work:

                                              1. Pick one of these nice gestures and do it.

                                              2. Share your experience – Email, Youtube, Twitter, Blog Post or at a Club Meeting.

                                              3. In the same announcement, challenge your network to do perform one of these gestures as well. If possible, display this list of 20 gestures to make it easier for them to think of something to do.

That’s it. I’m not asking for links. I’m not asking for any sort of credit for this idea. I just want to see how far this can go and hopefully by Christmas of this year, everyone will have at least one story to share about a good deed they have performed.

                                              • Michael Kwan 3.54 pm on 06.05.2008 Permalink

Neat idea. I just might give it a whirl.

Hm, after reading the list I realised had made some of the gestures. However, planting a tree and donating blood sound like a good idea, too :)

What this means to the average consumer is that we’re going to get a lot of NICE programs for our iPhone now without having to hack at it and worry that our iPhones are going to turn into glorified paper weights.

Why is Apple sitting pretty you may ask? Well, for those of you who missed my Steve Jobs is a Genius post a couple of months ago, I pretty much nailed what he was going to do today regarding the distribution and compensation of iPhone apps. There are going to be a lot of newly rich developers coming out this year.

My apologies for telling people to invest in Apple stock when it was at 160-ish and now is in the 120′s (blame that on the weak US dollar and fear of recession), but I’ve put my money where my mouth is and have invested even more into Apple stock. They’re going to have a VERY nice 2nd half of the year.

                                              Who wants to think otherwise?

The people at Apple really have a knack for releasing one surprise after another. Well, maybe it’s not so much a surprise to you but one would have thought that the Macbook air was the last big bang for a while. Instead, one finds himself enthralled by a new release barely recovering from the last one.

                                              Love Turning 30

Turning 30This weekend I celebrated my 30th birthday and amazingly, I didn’t crumble into fetal position and become depressed about my life. Instead, I looked forward to my birthday with friends and family and celebrated the successes and accomplishments in my life rather than complaining about what I don’t have. This was suppose to be more of a post reflecting on my life, but that gets too boring, so I’m just going to write about things I would tell an “under-30″ about reach the point of “after-30.” I’d like to call it:

Things I’ve learned over the years:

A Night of Drinking takes away a Day of your Life

                                              When there’s a valley, there’s always a peak.

You are who you surround yourself with.

There are friends, then acquaintances, & then people you just don’t need in your life.

It’s more productive waking up early, then waking up late.

Take more risks when you have Less Responsibilities.

A broken heart is a healthy heart.

Money doesn’t buy Happiness, but it does buy time!

It’s never too early to say “thank you!”

I think that’s it for now. I know I had more yesterday on my actual birthday, but with the hangover and everything, I just couldn’t think. =). I just can’t wait to turn 40 so I can look back at my life and smile some more.

Is there anything you want to add to the list? What lessons have you learned throughout your life? Are you looking forward to “old age?”

Happy Thanksgiving! Thank you for . . .

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone! I know this is mainly an holiday in the United States as our Neighbors up north celebrate their thanksgiving in October. I’m pretty sure every country has a day where they look back and give thanks for what they have in their lives.

I want to give thanks for:

My Family – I’m especially thankful that my family is doing better than ever after such hard times before.

My Health – even with a slight stone in my kidney

My Friends – without them, I wouldn’t be the person I am today with the opportunities I have today.

Everything else that has happen this year has been great. I never would have thought I would be where I am today in regards to my career and the whole blogosphere. I can’t wait for the new year to start.

Now I got to go to Grandma’s and chow down!

The Genius of Steve Jobs and iTunes

Westside for Life! When the Apple iPhone first came out, Steve Jobs was adamant on keeping modified operating system a secret to the public. Call it paranoia from his dealings with Microsoft or maybe just call it maintaing the status quo as OSX is still a operating system made exclusively for Apple Computers. In any case, Jobs was not letting just anyone have the ability to create a piece of software that Jobs first claimed might take down the whole west coast AT&T network.

That is when the hackers got to work and started coming out with web-based hacks such as Jailbreak that allow users to use different carriers other than AT&T and use 3rd party apps such as my favorites – NES Emulator & Tap Tap Revolution! Once word started to get around through sites like TUAW.com and MacNN.com that it was easier than ever to hack your iPhone, people started purchasing iPhones at a record setting pace. One stat showed that 1 out of every 4 iPhones purchased were purchased with the intent of hacking.

Apple quickly tried to put out this potential disaster, as they have a very lucrative profit sharing deal with AT&T. Some estimates I have heard are around 40% of revenues generated from users over their 2 year deal and then a percentage of their lifelong contract if they stay with AT&T. Apple would be losing out on the market they so dearly wanted to be part of. The third leg of their media empire was starting to become shaky.

                                              So, what does Jobs do?

He gives a big F-U to the hackers by saying that he will be releasing the SDK (Software Development Kit) in March of 2008 so that all programmers will be available to develop for the iPhone. For those of you who don’t know, the SDK is like the blueprints for the iPhone operating system. Once the uber-smart programmers learn it, they’ll be able to make programs that take full advantage of the iPhone’s capabilities.

Now, why do you think Jobs finally decided to open up the iPhone? Was it because he knew he was fighting a losing battle? or did he finally figure a way out to monetize the demand for 3rd party apps on the iPhone. I think he finally realized that this isn’t like the personal computer where he needs to hide the secrets of the operating system in order to maintain his market share in the hardware market. Jobs has finally realized that there is only one iPhone and that unlike the computer, can be a truly big money making machine if he plays his cards right. So, follow me here:

                                              Jobs introduces iPhone.

                                              Hackers get to work.

Jobs notices demand for 3rd Party Apps

Jobs opens up wireless purchasing of itune music.

Jobs opens up iPhone with SDK

Programmers start to build Must-Have Apps

                                              Apple sell more iPhones

                                              iPhones sell more iTunes Music

Now, here comes the genius part. The part where Jobs will be regulated to God status if he is able to make it work. Jobs will set up a deal with programmers similar to ones artists signs with recording companies. He will sell iPhone apps on iTunes for $0.99 and programmers will make a percentage off each sale. Imagine buying an iPhone Airport App that tells you the current status of your flight for $0.99. Imagine how many people would buy that app, then imagine how much that programmer would probably make instead of asking for a paypal donation. The potential for this is so much greater than the ringtones fiasco Jobs tried launching a few months ago.

The quality of apps and iPhone usage would go through the roof and both parties will win because Jobs will be able to make more money in hardware, software and iTunes products and programmers will be able to make more money than if they tried to promote and sell the programs themselves.

Current Apple Stock is at $163.95. I would suggest buying some stock soon!

Jobs may have learned a thing or 2 in business after getting it in the butt so many times before.

I think it was planned all along, as you can’t possibly go into any market like this and not expect it to be hacked in this day and age. Using the hype around it to not only profit from it, but possibly create a bunch of jobs that pay because of it is certainly a good thing in my book.

My first blog entry via iPhone

                                              mgliphone.gif

After watching the craziness that was the iPhone launch day, I did’t think I would be getting an iPhone for another four weeks after ordeing it on apple.com. Before i went to sleep last night, i went to most of the big apple forums to get my fix. I learned that the local apple store here in pasadena still had a few more left, so i decided that i would just wake up early and get there when they open at 9pm.

As i exited the parking garage and turned the corner, i was surprised to see that there were already 25-30 people waiting in line. I asked the lady in front of me how fast the line was moving and she said that it was moving pretty fast. At the same time, the store manager came out to check the line, so i asked him if I should have anything to worry about. He smiled and told me that I shouldn’t have anything to worry about.

Once I got to the cashier, I was just only going to get one 8gb iPhone, but the stock guys who brought out the last boxes whispered to the manager that they only have 15 left in the back, so instead of just getting one, i got two to hopefully resale on craigslist or ebay. Yes, iknow its evil, but i could get a pratically free iphone if i sell it for a good price, especially since i checked the iphone inventory and it seems every Apple store is now sold out!

It didnt take me too long to activate and transfer my old ipod stuff over. I’ve been messing with it for most of the day and so far it’s everything i expected and this keyboard types unbelievably well.

What do you think of the iPhone? Are there any questions you have? Do you have any tips?

you can buy two and do whatever you want, but the only way to use any of the iphone features is to activate the phone through the carrier

I purchased an iPod but absolutely hate iTunes.

I guess the primary reason why I hate iTunes is because I can not use it. iTunes can not be installed on my laptop either because it belongs to my employer. (I would need to get approval from the IT department) Since I use the laptop about 95% of the time, this was a big disappointment.

For some reason, I had assumed you could just drag and drop files too and from the iPod the way you can with a USB thumb drive.

I learned today that it’s the same thing with the iPhone… The sales person said that I at least meed Windows XP & iTunes, but I only have 2,000 on my computer at home and can’t get iTunes installed at work. I also explained my frustration with my iPod needing to interface with iTunes and the clerk recommended that I should not purchase an iPhone because I would not be able to use most of the features and might not even be able to activate it.

Oh Well… I’m sure someone will come out with something similar that runs FireFox, has bradband capabilities and does not require the user to install software to perform the very most basic of functions like activating the device and transferring files to various computers.

Was I misinformed? Is iTunes a fundamental requirement for iPhone usage? Is it true that you can not perform basic functions like transfer files to and from a computer without the need to install software?

I think it would unlocked insofar that you get to use the voice services with another network (i.e., use another SIM). Many of the features — like visual voicemail — are probably AT&T-only. You can probably still use the Google map and HTML web browser, but data costs an arm and a leg in Canada. Like Ed, I’ve also seen a couple of unlocked iPhones for about $1300 or so. Something like that.

So… you hate iTunes because your computer has been locked down by your employer? Sounds like you should be made at your companies tech department! I can understand that you wouldn’t like the fact that you must us iTunes to sync…

In reality though, iTunes approach to media management and actual implantation is far superior to any other media management software out there!

I guess browsing might be handy but I’ve never “browsed” iTunes. I simply want to place and remove media I already have onto the device. My problem is we have 4 computers in the house and more at work. I also need to share media with friends and clients. Using an iPhone would likely involve installing iTunes on all of them.

I’m frustrated because there seems to be no “Need” for this. My 2Gig USB drive works like a charm. No need to install software or sync the device, etc… Just plug it in and it works… “Everywhere”. I use it for everything. I use it to take my digital pictures to the photo-lab and keep sales presentations on it for when I’m meeting with a client, etc, etc.

If the iPhone could perform this very simple and extremely useful task, I would get one.

Now that I think about it… I even have USB cable for my camera. No need to use iTunes or any other software to transfer media on or off my camera.

Can you do this with an iPhone? Can you just show up at the photo lab, plug the iPhone into the kiosk and transfer the images for developing?

(In my opinion) This is the very most basic requirement. I just think it’s strange that such a sophisticated Multi-Media device like this can not transfer media across multiple computers without first being enclosed inside the walled garden of iTunes.

Those are some good points – especially the photo lab one, personally, I just use Internet printing…

As for sharing media, you could install iTunes all machines and share the “server’s” library (you could set up a network shared drive and “stream” the tunes through Explorer – but that is a very inefficient way of doing it)!

I am dying to get one. I have been staying clear of the Mac store and the AT&T store just because I know I won’t be able to stop myself.
Are all the reviews good so far? I had to stop checking after the first day, because I was still green with envy!

                                              2009 Toyota Supra is Mine

2009 Toyota Supra of Mr. Gary Lee

A few months ago, Toyota reignited the 1st generation Rice Rocket fan in me with their new concept car – FT-HS. Growing up in Los Angeles, I’ve always been a little car crazy starting off with my 1990 Integra RS which I slammed, straight-piped and blew an engine with (racing that damn Maxima on the 57 freeway . . DAMN YOU!), then moving on to my 1993 Honda Prelude Si which again I slammed and straight piped along with giving that baby some nice 17″ Enkeis on 40 series tires!

As I grew older and my lower back began to go out, I then moved onto a Ford Expedition, which after months of MTV Cribs Brainwashing gave me the idea to put it on Dubs and a give it the first Harley Davidson Front Kit placed on an Expedition (that’s what the dealer told me):

                                              2003 Ford Harley Expedition

I just recently moved onto an Infinit FX35 last year (completely stock if you can believe that) to counter today’s rising gas prices. But because of my lead foot, I’m getting the same mpg that I did with my expedition! Dammit! This by far has been my most favorite car as it’s a perfect blend of speed and size.

So back to the new 2009 Toyota Supra. The lease on my FX runs up exactly in 2009, so it must be a sign for me to get the Supra, right? First of all, it’s a hybrid using the same engine as the current Lexus GS 450h, generating 400 horsepower and capable of going from 0-60mph in less than 4 seconds while sipping on gas at about 30-40 mpg – all for between $30-40k! I’m calling the Toyota Dealer right now to ask about the wait list. I’ll let you guys know how it goes after I put myself on it =)

See ya in my Rear View Mirror!

Is it really going to replace the Supra? I thought there was going to be a new Supra anyways. But 400 HP plus the added bonus of actually getting good gas mileage?! I’m in. However I fear like the new GT-R it will be way, way, too expensive. So hopefully by ’09… I’m rich. But yah, other than that I kinda like the rims and accel plugs – http://www.speedyperformanceparts.com/accel-plugs_p.html – but I don’t really know why. And the front end reminds me of a Mazda. And the Top end reminds me of the new GT-R; And actually looking back up, most of the front end resembles a Mazda save for the lights.

I had a 1988 Supra and missed it ever since I sold it. I’m going to have a close look at this new version! I doubt it will be a hybrid – it would be hard to win over the tuner community with an eco-friendly rice rocket.

                                              Blog Questions Answered:

When did you get into Blogging and why?

I started blogging shortly after attending my first SES conference back 2 years ago in August. I met a lot of people there who had blogs and it just seemed like a cool easy thing to do. I wanted a place to put down my thoughts on the search engine/ affiliate industry and also my pictures.

What is your favorite thing about blogging?

The readers ;) ! Also so many people tell me I have made a difference in there life reading from my experiences. That is pretty cool!

What is the most important lesson you’ve learned regarding your blog?

Watch what you say. Ive made some comments about some people that I never thought would actually see them. Some celebrities and even top people at search engines have reached out to me personally and I felt really bad about what I said …. On one hand I was stunned that someone knew someone who pointed them to what I said but then when you talk with them you see they are just a regular person like you.

What’s the Best Internet Marketing Advice you can give to up and coming young bloggers?

Just find something you like and work with it. If it feels like work it probably is not going to be very successful. My blog for instance is something I do when I take a “break” from normal work.

Where do you think the future of blogging will be in 5-10 years?

I think as spamblogs increase on the web there will come a point where search engines will throw up the white flag and start to just lower the value of all blogs they can fingerprint. For this and many other reasons you should always write your blog for your readers and not search engines.

What do you like to do away from blogging and the computer?

I like to spend time with my daughter, juliet and my wife, J.

                                              The New Transformer Toys Suck

So, my super Spidey Fan friend im’d me again today and let me know that the new Transformer toys were out and asked me what I thought of them. Being that I already saw the trailers for the movie and got freaked out at the sight of BumbleBee (who happens to be a Chevy Camaro . . seriously – WTF? . . it’s not BumbleMaro), I wasn’t too excited to click on the link my friend sent me. No matter what, I AM excited about the Transformers movie coming out on 7.4.7!

Before you see the pictures, remember back in the day when toys were pretty damn good? The complexity and attention to detail of the older toys, especially the ones from Japan, would just kill about anything built today. Toymakers today are all about plastic molds that snap together and bright flourescent colors that just hurt the eyes!

Go ahead, compare the new with the old and tell me which one more than meets the eye!

Transformers - Optimus Prime vs. Transformers - New Optimus Prime

Oh! If you don’t know of this site, check it out – http://www.robotech.com! It’s a great site about one of my favorite cartoons from back in the day! Plus, if you liked the toys, they are a great resource to find Skull Leader, Max and Rick Hunter’s Veritech Fighters!

I’m going to have to wait till I see the toys up close and personal. I am eagerly awaiting the movie too. Yesterday was a Transformers Media Blitz day. The shoe one is funny. There is a video of a transforming shoe somewhere and that is where that idea came from. Some of th toys are not half bad and I think Bumblebee as a Camaro will work out fine in the movie.

                                              Trying my Poetry Skills

I was just tagged by the Queen of Musings with a poetry meme. She’s helped me get started by giving me the first line to work with – “Roses are Red” – so here’s what I could come up with:

                                              Roses are Red
                                              Violets are Blue
                                              The Queen come a calling
                                              And Said “What about you?”

So, I think and I Ponder

Yes, it sounds like a 3rd grader wrote it, but the poems that rhyme are the only ones I’ve ever learn to write. I do have to admit I have a certain appreciation of it after watching a couple of seasons of HBO’s Def Poetry Jams ( a show I highly recommend to everyone)! I wish I could write spoken word poetry like these great poets!

So ya . . now it’s time to tag people and so here I go:

I can’t wait to see if these 3 ladies can top my poem!

Funny, creative, it rhymes – works for me! I didn’t mean to give you a first line but it’s added an interesting twist to the meme if we request that each person we tag has to include a line we give ‘em!

                                              My Obssesive Thoughts

Julies Journal just tagged me to find out my Top 5 Obsessive Thoughts and since I’ve got nothing else better to do besides my monthly reports, I thought I’d play along:

                                              • Golf – Recently, I’ve been addicted to playing golf at least once a week.
                                              • Lakers Basketball – If they lose, I refuse to watch SportsCenter all night. If they win, I watch every single piece of sports news programming I can.
                                              • Gadgets – for the last year, it’s been Apple stuff, but overall, I’m a tech whore who is your typical early adopter.
                                              • Enjoying Life – Either through Spending more time with my family, Meeting new people, enjoying new restaurants or learning new skills that expand my horizons.
                                              • Blogging – Been doing this for the past month and a half and it’s the first thing I think of when I wake up and the last thing I think of when I go to sleep. Now that’s obsessive!

Now, according to this meme, I’m suppose to tag 5 more people, so I’m tagging Ms.Q, Jeff Kee, Ed Lau, John Anthony, and Nate Whitehill because I want to know what their Obsseive thoughts are now!

Nice Try Apple, but I Buy Singles for a Reason!

Apple just came out with a new marketing gimmick for iTunes called “Complete My Album,” which basically gives you a $0.99 credit for each song you’ve previously purchased from iTunes towards the album that song came from. So, if you got a couple of songs from the same album and the album cost 10 bucks, then you get a discount of *wait for the drumroll* . . . . . . . $1.98 which comes out to an oustanding price of $8.02!

Now tell me, where’s the deal in this?

And since you’re telling me stuff, can you tell me why Apple would think I would want to waste my money buying the whole album when the whole reason iTunes is so successful is because they allow us to easily buy singles any time?

I know I’m a Apple whore, but I ain’t stupid! Whoever does this thinking that they’re getting a deal deserves a Michael Kwan-esque Kick in the Chest!

To be fair though, the fact that iTunes customers weren’t given credit for their previous single purchases if they decided later to buy the full album was a frequent complaint by some people. The other part of this is that the recording industry is still not ready to abandon the album altogether. Encouraging album purchases both up front and some time later by way of small discounts can help. And if Apple wants to eventually convince the major labels to ditch DRM, they have to play nice ;)

Still, I hear you, and I’ll continue to buy singles when it suits me.

It’s a good idea but I’m not going to purchase whole albums off the internet in MP3 format. If I am going to buy a whole album, I’m going to get the CD so I have something I can actually hold in my hand with some cover art and such.

…oh, but of course I buy singles off the internet since most CDs are one or two awesome songs thrown into a pile of crap.

AppleTV is Just Average for Now

I’ve been using my AppleTV for almost a week now and here are some observations I have made:

                                              Likes

                                              • The Potential of overtaking my Cable Service
                                              • Accessibility to my Media

                                              • Looks like it’s Hackable

                                              Don’t Likes

                                              • Doesn’t always sync with my iMac
                                              • Having to convert all my media to .mp4
                                              • Stays pretty warm when not in use.
                                              • No Volume Control

So far, I’m still on the fence about whether or not I want to return my AppleTV back to Apple or not. The biggest reason I don’t just go and trade this in for a MacMini is because the MacMini doesn’t have Wireless N capabilities yet. I would recommend this product only to those who aren’t as adept to learning terms like “codecs” and “Divx” and are comfortable paying for films and music straight from iTunes.

I said I’d give a review of the AppleTV by now, so if I had to give it a grade right now, I would give it a “C” since it doesn’t do anything spectacular for me just yet. At least a lot of modders out there are working hard to enhance the capabilities of the AppleTV, so expect to see another grade coming soon once I incorporate those “add-ons”!

AppleTV getting Ready to take over CableTV

As I was syncing my content between my iMac and AppleTV this weekend, I suddenly caught myself subscribing to all kinds of video podcasts. For those of you who don’t know, video podcasts are basically videos that are produced and automatically downloaded to your podcast reader (in this case, iTunes) as new shows are released. As I continued to download more and more video podcasts, I realized that I was in a sense ordering my cable television a la carte! No longer do I have to surf through the home shopping network’s 15 channel section or the other 80 channels I have no interest in watching. I just need my Sports, News and Tech News and I would be completely satisfied with my television programming – all easily accessible to me any time I want on my AppleTV.

By using iTunes, Podcasting Technology and AppleTV, Steve Jobs has in a sense driven the final nail into the cable company’s coffin. In a time when individualism rules all with ipods, iphones and imacs, Apple has now combined the convenience of Tivo with the innovation of Apple to create a way for you to make your iCableNetwork. Most of the people I know only watch a handful of television shows. Imagine if you were to only pay a small subscription fee to have every episode of 24, Lost and Greys Anatomy automatically downloaded to your iTunes every week! You’re already saving hundreds of dollars a year in monthly cable bills there. If you think you’re going to miss your network news or sports news, guess what – they’re FREE in the iTunes Podcast Directory! Try and find a way the Cable Companies are going to be able to compete!

Financially, the networks really wouldn’t lose that much money as they will be getting paid millions of dollars from subscribers of their top tier shows every month. We all know that in every network, 20% of the shows produce are the ones that also produce 80% of the overall revenue. With the law of economic’s supply and demand, monthly subscription prices can be driven up or down, so I’m sure the networks will be able to make this work for themselves. If you don’t think this is happening soon, then you’re about as out of it as my cable box!

Cable has been pushing On Demand for a long time but it really hasn’t caught on but iTV will make true On Demand a reality for everyone!!

Great article. I see cable TV getting wiped out here soon by IPTV and podcasts on demand.

IPTV and pay-per-program models are definitely where TV is going. And honestly … that’s the way I wish it was. I would much rather pay $5-10/month for the few shows I actually care to watch (plus sports games of course ;) ) than pay $50/month for 100 channels I never watch.

                                                It just makes more sense!

I dont watch TV that much, when I do I find there is nothing I want to watch. We keep it because of the Spanish channels. I agree with you and can’t wait until the day you can order by the slice for television.

This is the reason why DVD sales of TV programs are so hot there days.

It really does! Now, if we could get an ad blocker for AppleTV, it would be perfect!

                                              Learning from a Sniper

marines.pngLast night, I was hanging out with some friends and met a sniper for the United States Marine Corp. I became interested right away with what it takes to become a sniper, since I absolutely love playing the role in video games. So, I bombarded him with questions and here are some things I learned that I thought I’d share:

                                              • The Marine Corp is at the service of the President of the United States. Also known as the “President’s Pride,” the Marines have at least one unit of troops in every body of water in the world!
                                              • A Unit of Troops consists of around 250 troops. Just to let know what kind of damage 250+ Marines can do – that’s about how many overtook Bagdhad.
                                              • To complete Sniper School Training, a student is given a 3 hour head start into a forrest where he will use new skills of deception and camoflauge to hide from a group of men trained to hunt him down. If he can travel the 8 miles to his target without getting caught, he’s in!
                                              • The Marines now have rifles with a range of about 1.2 miles, using ammo that’s about 3 inches long! To aim, you adjust the rear of your scope to move left and right for wind and the front of the scope to aim up and down to account for trajectory.
                                              • The minimum distance a Sniper should be from his target is 300 yards to give him a good buffer to escape if detected.
                                              • To make sure you fully understand your target, a sniper needs to study his target for long time, sometimes a few days, to understand how the target moves, walks, limps and their daily routine.
                                              • Once the movements are learned, all a sniper wants is a body shot. To help with his escape and avoid detection, the sniper will want to either shoot the target “midstep” to cause the target to spin or if the target is standing still, to shoot him in a part of the body that will induce the spin. The spin is very important to avoiding detection so that instead of people looking the opposite way of where the target has fallen, they now have to scan at least a 90 degree range from the target. With the 300 yard buffer, the sniper has a high chance of escaping without being deteced.

The last thing I learned which was the most important was that this is not even close to being a video game. Covering yourself in camel dung, crawling 4 miles in tall grass and staying still for 4 days is not something that you can truly experience unless you have done it. Also, no matter how much I disagree with the premise of the war, I fully support the troops that work their ass off to protect this country. The sniper I met will going back to Iraq in July for his third tour of duty and I just want to wish him Godspeed and the best of luck!

Snipers are just about as awesome as it gets.
