This Week in Blogs sees some Old and some New

Hannes Johnson is throwing a contest to raise his ranking in the Technorati Top 100 listing. Hanne’s is giving away some cold hard cash and PR4 link in his Featured Sites section!

Cash for Comments just started a link train of his own called the Jet Train where he somehow combo’d the idea of a link train with the promtion of a contest. This guy is one of Ms. Danielle’s disciples and is always coming up with crazy stuff. You really have to check it out, even it’s just for the crazy diagrams explaing link trains and video clips featuring himself.

A-List BloggerLeo Chiang – Using a new tool that Leo found, I found out that I’m being listed as an A-List blogger. It’s basically a tool that takes into account how many backlinks you got through technorati. Now I know how Barry Bonds feels or at least how he should feel, gaming the system!

Jamaipanese – Interesting site about a Jamaican in love with the Japanese Culture. I’ve always been interested in understanding more about the Japanese, but never have taken the time. I guess I know where to look now if I ever have the time!

Contest Blogger – If you like the iPhone Giveaway Contest and just want to participate in more contests, check out this site for all the top contests out there in the blogosphere. Just on the first page, I see that there’s a total of $500 being given away, Google Lava Lamp, and t-shirts. If you’re in the mood, go check it out!

Cool blogs ;) Thanks for the mention – you just got 5 entries in my contest :)
Contest Blogger sounds like a great idea – I will definitely send him a submission next time I have a contest and I will probably check the blog out regularly because we all love a good contest, right? :)

By the way – The prize in my contest is a website review on my blog and $25 – but if you don’t want the cash (or if you don’t have a PayPal account) I will give you a featured link for 2 months. Maybe I should have explained that a little better in the post…
      So, it’s either A) Review + $25 or B) Review + PR4 link

    • Leo 6.36 pm on 28.07.2007 Permalink

Thanks for the mention! I’m a B-lister myself but it’s all for fun anyways, my mom tells me I’m on her A-list ;)

Contest Blogger rocks – trying to set up your own blogging contest is a study in futility. Trust me – I have tried. Next step – work with Contest Blogger and see if I can make it work this time around.

luckier than my iPhone contest? =)

    • Hannes Johnson 11.50 am on 30.07.2007 Permalink

Well, right now there are 28 entries in the contest. So, if you favorite and comment + post about this in your blog you’ll have a 6/34 chance of winning (which is about 18%).

So you don’t have to be that lucky… But like they say, you don’t win if you don’t have a ticket ;)

    • Saman Sadeghi 10.10 pm on 06.08.2007 Permalink

The weekend are fairly slow, people spend time with their families…

I’m actually surprised at how much traffic I get on the weekends! It’s a lot more then I expect (but I’m on then, so there you go).

    TWIB: So Many New Faces

This Week in Blogs got a lot easier with the influx of entries into the iPhone give away I started earlier this week. I’ve been chatting it up with a lot of people from around the world about blogging, the iPhone and each other’s part of the world a lot this week.

So, without further adieu, here are some sites that caught my eye this week:

Sandier Pastures – Dubai’s been recreating so many new tourist attractions and their version of the Venice Canals is no different!

World of Dreams – I just learned it’s Buy a Friend a Book Week and it’s FRIDAY!!! Can we count Danielle keeping one of my books for 6 months as my donation?

Egonitron – Just posted an article about how Google’s gonna get a PR 8. I won’t believe it until I see it!

Shawn Knight – Long time reader Shawn Knight just posted about Fried Food and even better, it’s southern fried food, so he gets a mention just because I’m a sucker for anything fried!

Make Money with Kassper – It seems like I can make money with so many people online now, so why not Kassper, too? He’s just saved me a post and talks about how Google is taking advantage of their new acquisition and intergrating Feedburner into Blogspot.

To Facebook or not to FacebookEd Lau just posted this question this morning and to be honest, I’ve been thinking about the same thing. I’m annoyingly tired of sifting through the garbage they call MySpace, Friendster’s a joke now and Bunkers Paradise just isn’t finished yet! What is a stalker, er, friend suppose to do these days to find people?

Hope you enjoy these blogs! If I haven’t pushed it enough, here’s my chance to . . . all these blogs were entries in my iPhone Giveaway Contest, so if you haven’t entered yet, what are you waiting for?

TWIB: The Blog Homies & Kumiko

After a two week hiatus from my TWIB series, I thought I’d bring it back to the old school and show some love to my blog homies and kumiko (who probably won’t even know i’m linking to her). With some blogs folding in the recent weeks, it shows a lot that these bloggers are still going strong with some really great content:

Career Ramblings – Start Thinking Like an Entrepreneur

Ed Edition – TV Year in Review

Nate Whitehill – 5 Ways to Make Your Posts more Readable

Kumiko – Free Sex using MyBlogLog or is that the other way around?

DoshDosh – How to create your own niche blogging masterplan

Samanathon – An actual post about an Apple product on Saman’s site!

Just a reminder . . . . the best workstation contest is ending at the end of this month, so take the time this weekend to clean up your desk to take some photos and win that Motorola Stereo Bluetooth Headset!

no one you’d know . . but i’ve been keeping track of some blogs that have been slowly posting less and less frequently . . . let’s call it the 90 posts in 90 days test – something like that requirement JC gives you to be on his blogroll, ya know?

    • Kumiko 6.12 pm on 25.05.2007 Permalink

I’ve noticed it too! I think there’s a large number of blogs that were started around dec/06-jan/07 that are now hitting that 6month wall and running out of things to write about it. Let’s hope that we don’t go down the same path!

While I’m sad to see them go, it also means that during the next big wave of blogs starting we’ll be the “established” kings and queens of the blogging world!

    Top 5 Blogs I Read

I recently received a tag from my good blogger friend Hannes Johnson on a new 5 Must Read Blogs meme he’s participating in, which was started by The Paper Bull. It’s pretty simple as all I have to do is write something about my favorite blogs. Here we go:

DoshDosh.com – Maki’s blog was one of the first blog’s I added to my RSS subscription when I first started blogging. It was from his Z-List that I started learning about Link Trains and from that point on, I’ve learned many things about making money online with DoshDosh.Com. He’s been very helpful with focusing my blog and I had the pleasure of joining forces with Maki to make the Technorati Faves Exchange a huge success.

JohnChow.com – John Chow was the inspiration for my start in blogging. Reading his daily food stories to his tremendous success stories about making $8-12k a month through his blog keeps me motivated to succeed in my own blogging and internet career.

ShoeMoney.com – Another A-List blogger that I have read from the very beginning. I just conducted a interview with Jeremy and it shows how accomodating and in touch he is with his readers. ShoeMoney has a great blend of Jeremy’s personal experiences along with helpful blogging tips.

BlueHatSEO.com – I admit that I have no clue how to program or code, so reading BlueHatSEO.com is a little challenging for me to understand. No matter though, I still read this blog to make sure I’m up to date with what’s going on in the underground world of internet marketing.

AndyBeard.eu – Andy’s blog is relatively new to my RSS Subscription, but it doesn’t matter. He writes some of the most detailed analysis about any topic you can think of regarding internet marketing and making money online as a whole.

Tag – I’m going to tag Ms. Danielle, Jeff Kee (since Jeff Kee’s already done this meme, I’m gonna tag Ed Lau), and Jane May and much like Hannes Johnson, I’m going to tag two more people who comment on this post with something like than a 5 word sentence.

    • thepaperbull 11.18 am on 15.05.2007 Permalink

Thanks for chiming in on the meme and for passing it on
      Cheers

Uggh. I’ve already been tagged for this actually. And wrote a post.

    • Gary Lee 11.39 am on 15.05.2007 Permalink

      that’s right . . . guess I’ll tag someone else . . . haha

    • Hannes Johnson 2.05 pm on 16.05.2007 Permalink

      Cool list.
I’m seeing DoshDosh and John Chow again and again on these kind of lists. Looks like they’re doing something right ;)

i’ll try to crank this out this weekend. how did u come across bluehatseo? i have that site in my bookmarks too but i can’t remember how i found them :)
and yes doshdosh will most likely be in my list too. and even though i don’t read maki’s site everyday, it prob is one of the best sources for online marketing tips and making money online… not to sound cliche or anything…

TWIB: This Week in Blogs V

I can’t begin to tell you how crazy this week has been, but I’ve survived and even had some time to surf around a little bit. With all the fave exchanges I’ve been getting from the Technorati Link Train, I’ve been able to read a lot of interesting blogs. To be honest with you, I still have a lot of blogs to catch up on since the train is moving way too fast for me now, so I’m going to give you some great posts from some of my buddies and a couple of new blogs i found from my fave exchange.

Traffic Steroids vs. Natural Traffic – Nate Whitehill talks about the delusional grandeur of getting on the front page of Digg.

Optimize your Adsense – Saman writes a great tutorial on adding some simple pieces of code to your blog to make sure Google is analyzing the right parts of your website to properly monetize your traffic.

Google’s building a Rat Ship – Ms. Danielle gives us the lowdown about Google’s new plan to counter paid linking strategies across the net.

Why you’re Not a Billionaire – Andy writes about how not taking vacations and sleeping EVER should get you to millionaire status real quick. You don’t want me to tell you what it takes to make Billionaire status!

Hot Women, er, People from MySpace – Ever since starting my blog a couple of months ago, I have neglected my man duties of checking out Hot women on the net until now!

TWIB: This Week in Blogs IV

Before I get to another edition of This Week in Blogs, I just wanted to update you all on some minor changes I made to the site this week. First of all, I followed suit with Nate and Nomar and decided to stop my affiliation Chowtera, er, Kontera, since I was getting a low click through rate and the overall eCPM sucked. As opposed to subtracting, the new feature I’ve added comes from one of our web development neighbors up north called FeedBuddy. The site generates a nice RSS Button with a drop down menu that you should notice in my right column now, which I hope will get you to subscribe to my blog =)

    Now, this Week in Blogs

Career Ramblings – 4 Cover Letter Secrets - I’ve been in the process of hiring a marketing team here in Los Angeles and you don’t understand how frustrating it is find people these days because of their lack knowledge in applying for jobs. This article along with many others at Career Ramblings should be a must read for all job searchers out there!

IKEA Hacker – Getting the Most out your IKEA furniture - I could of used this site in college to really pimp out my pad. Some great tips and photos from some really creative people.

Here in Idaho – Pretty good Humor Site - I just found this site through the Queen of Musings since she dedicated a whole post to checking out her obsessions.

Noodle Whore – Anthony Bourdain’s personal Southern California Asian Noodle Expert

808Talk.com – A Supporter from Back in the Day. Check out his Podcast if you’re thinking about going to the Islands! Mahalo VB!

    • Jason Spence 12.54 pm on 13.04.2007 Permalink

I don’t blame you about the Kontera links, as I’m about ready to ditch them myself.

    • Jane May 3.46 pm on 13.04.2007 Permalink

Thanks for these Gary. Saves some time blog surfing finding post like this! :-)

      LOL…hacking IKEA?

    • derek 9.12 pm on 13.04.2007 Permalink

On my finance site, Kontera has actually been doing fairly well (at least compared to my previous results with other things). I cannot say the same for my other site but it has only been about two days on that site so far.

Nice links though, I found some new interesting blogs to check out.

    • Nomar 12.39 am on 14.04.2007 Permalink

Good you stopped performing Kontera to !!

    • Gary Lee 4.46 pm on 14.04.2007 Permalink

I think Kontera would work well for a very niche blog with high amounts of traffic. I noticed a lot of the keywords or phrases that were highlighted by kontera could not have possibly generated any advertising revenue.

    • Jason Spence 8.48 am on 15.04.2007 Permalink

Being on the hunt for a new job myself, I’m sure I’ll be able to use some of these tips for my cover letter. Thanks for the list.

Another week passes and another TWIB is published:

20-myths.pngThe 20 Greatest Historical Myth. I found this while stumbling and I am now more loaded with useless knowledge than ever before. Bring on Jeoparody!

kobe.png In a time with increased media exposure, the Best Player in the NBA just doesn’t get the respect he is due.

nomar.pngA Great article about important SEO Ranking Factors. Something we should all read up on to prepare for the upcoming PageRank Update!

mosaic.png Another result of stumbling, so I hope you’re installing that toolbar right now. It has made surfing the net a little bit more fun. Look at what I got to do with one of my pictures using this mosaic tool (feel free to use it as your wallpaper), which uses flickr images to recreate your favorite images:

    TWIB: This Week in Blogs

This is going to be my first official speed linking post and I’m going to call it This Week in Blogs, which is an obvious bite of one of my favorite podcasts: This Week in Tech with Leo Laporte. I googled the phrase and no one has really officially used it as a category for their site, so if anyone has a problem . . . . you should have done a better job branding the phrase!

I’m going to try my best to surf the net and show you what has been catching my eyes as I surf around the net during my 80+ hours/wk on the net.

biggie.png1) Ed Lau – Notorious B.I.G.: Unbelievable – First of all, it’s a new remix album from Mick Boogie featuring one of the GodFathers of Hip Hop aka Biggie Smalls aka Big Poppa aka Christopher Wallace. So run, don’t walk cuz you’re going to want to get your ipod ready for this. Second, it’s a free download, so if you’re not already downloading this album, I don’t know you! This was a great find by Ed Lau and to know that he has great taste in Music just bumped him up on the cool meter (i’m gonna make one, just you wait)

ev.jpg2) Existential Ventures – 10 Ways to Market your Website using MyBlogLog – A lot of bloggers are on MyBlogLog and it has quickly become a great place to interact with other bloggers and also find new blogs. By placing a face to the blog, MyBlogLog has given a personal touch to the jumbled text and graphics that fills blogs all over the world. Anyways, Broc at Existential Ventures as pointed out 10 ways to increase your traffic, but my disclaimer here is that some of these tips aren’t the most ethical and maybe be frowned upon by some bloggers. I leave it up to your good judgement to use the tips as you see fit.

harpzon.gif3) Harpzon.com – Post a Comment and I’ll donate $10 for you – A lot has been debated in the last few weeks about the ethics of promoting your own site using a charity as a front. Personally, I think that as long as the charity benefits at the end of the day, it’s all good.

fastprinter.png4) JonLee.ca aka Web Development – Printer of the Future – I found this while reading through my feeds and thought this was the greatest thing since prices lowered on LCDs! A color printer that prints as fast as Laser Printers and just as fine too. Only if they would lower the friggin prices on ink cartridges, this world would be a much colorful and creative place!

cr.png5) CareerRamlings.com – Career Fairs: What the Heck do I do? – This is another great article for the newly graduated. I remember when I was in my last year at UC Irvine (zot!zot!) and was traveling to all the other universities such as USC and UCLA to check out their career fairs. I remember being overwhelmed because I lacked the preparation to make a good impression on the recruiters at these events. I highly recommend this post for anyone getting ready for the “Real World!

g.png6) The Benefits offered by Google – This article just snuck into this week in blogs as my co-worker emailed it to me while I was writing this post. It talks about the new trends Google are setting outside of the computer in the world of business. One major theme – Treat your employees as well as you treat your customers! Point well taken!

and that’s This Week in Blogs (insert TWIT music here)

    • Broc 12.27 pm on 23.03.2007 Permalink

Thanks for the mention too, but 60 pages per minute is actually faster than any laser printer! Its in a class of its own :D

Nice roundup of articles, Gary. I like these quick summaries of what’s going on around the blogosphere (or entire ‘net). Saves me a lot of surfing time and I often discover cool sites in niches that I normally would never check. Thanks!

Another website that I have been visiting recently is TylerCruz.com. One of the biggest reasons why is because he also runs PokerForums.org and that is one of the sites that I have been reading for the last year or so. Also, I kind of took notice of Tyler more when he didn’t participate in the “Name in My Domain” link train (no hard feelings Tyler). Anyways, Tyler is running a similar type of backlink program (thanks to Jose for the tip)that John Chow is running and also similar to what I am running, so I wanted to practice my blog reviewing skills with a review for Tyler.

To give you a little background on who Tyler Cruz is, he’s a young web entrepeneur on his journey to wealth. It looks like it’s going to be a pretty fast journey as he’s making an average of $256 a day for the past 6 months on top of the $100,000 he made last year. I’m going to just guess that most of that money was made from PokerForums.org, where the average CPA earned averages around $300.

Aside from raking in the dough, Tyler also has time to write interesting pieces of information in his blog about his experiences as a young web entrepeneur. He just wrote a piece about:

Like I said, they’re all interesting pieces that I’m sure a lot of you will be able to gain some knowledge from. If you’re looking for a blogging tips and strategy site, then this is probably not the best site to go to. As for monetizing the site, it doesn’t look like Tyler is looking to really monetize his website as there are no ads that are intergrated into the site. For someone who is getting so much traffic, I personally think he’s just throwing money away on a daily basis. He could be making at least $300 a day if he just put up an Adsense banner somewhere on the site.

As is customary on MrGaryLee.com – here are the snapshots of TylerCruz.com:tylercruzalexastats.png

Impressive numbers from Tyler. I started reading his blog back when it was reviewed on another blog, and I recommend it as well. Interesting stuff…not to mention I’m totally envious! :D

With the PR update coming soon I am doing a similar review scheme, which is a little easier. All you have to do is make one comment about our website http://www.taxfix.co.uk with the anchor text ‘tax refund’ and we will review your blog for free. Just email blog@taxfix.co.uk once you have done it. Also on my Blog I have written a list of other sites that offer links for reviews (in order of Page Rank). I thought you might be interested in adding yours or using the list to get some links from some high PR blogs. Just link to the post with any anchor text and I will add your site and email me on blog@taxfix.co.uk

    Thanks and Shout-Outs

As my blog is continuing to grow, I’ve had to ask for help here and there to incorporate some of the features that I feel will maximize the potential of this blog. I’m so thankful for the blog community that I have been able to join, as they have all come through with overwhelming support:

Mark Shead of Productivity501.com – Helped me over the weekend to set up my Related Posts Plugin. I also have to mention that Jeff Kee took some time out to answer some questions, even though he was recovering from a “rough” night!

JohnAnthony of CareerRamblings.com – Gave me some insightful tips on incorporating my new Leaderboard and also other aesthetic tips I will be implementing shortly

Ms. Danielle of the New MsDanielle.com – Just wanted to give everyone a big heads up that a new Ego-Site has just been created and that the one most of you know as PinkDeals is now up and running. Be a gentleman or lady and go welcome her new blog to the blogosphere!

Nick Ramsay aka Spud Oregon of Nice4Rice.com – This blog just started this week I think and Nick honored me by giving MrGaryLee.com the first EVER review! Even though he thinks my site is ugly (I wouldn’t talk if I were him) and that I’m a desparate comment whore (i might be), check out his site and hook me up some rice!

    Blog Review – KingNomar.com

I’ve been starting to compile a lists of people who have been linking to my site and who also have outstanding websites that have helped inspire me to create my own blog. I plan on writing a mini-review of these sites on a weekly basis to give them their due respect in the blogosphere.

Coincidentally, King Nomar is giving away some coupons for the best review of his site, so I decided to start off with his review to get myself qualified.

For those of you who don’t know who King Nomar is, he has quickly become one of the most popular web development/marketing bloggers on the internet. Started in October of 2006, his majesty has been writing informative and helpful articles that cover a wide range of web development including the following:

I have read and taken advice from King Nomar as this month, I planned on increasing my traffic with one of his helpful tips in signing up for free directories. These articles have helped garner a wide range of attention to KingNomar.com and the major statistics that measure blogging success do not disagree. According to Alexa, King Nomar’s numbers have shown a dramatic spike in the past few months. Also, the site’s Technorati ranking has shown tremendous growth, which is a true testament to the quality of work that King Nomar is publishing.

    kingnomaralexastats.png

    kingnomartechnorati.png

As you can see, numbers don’t lie.

Of course, every website could use a level of improvement and I definitely think that KingNomar.com is no exception. One of the first things I noticed is the grammar, which is by no means something I’m an expert at, but I did notice some mistakes here and there that were too much to ignore. I have noticed that Nomar has mentioned the need to upgrade the looks of his site and I would have to agree as it’s rather “vanilla” for my tastes. To be honest, I think any serious blogger who is looking to monetize his content, should go through multiple themes for his site, analyze the numbers and then pick the best one accordingly. The last thing I would advise is that the number of entries on the homepage should be cut down to about 5 posts as I think Nomar is wasting a lot of real estate in the right sidebar as he makes people scroll further and further down the page.

Overall, it’s obvious that I will still be visiting KingNomar.com as it’s a great resource for news and tips in the web development and blogging world.  I hope that after you read this review, you will soon realize the same.

    Mouth Watering Blog

As I continue my new adventures into the blogosphere, I always tend to come back home and catch up with the blogs that I have been reading for years! I know I have mentioned his blog before, so sue me for mentioning it again – EatDrinknbMerry – just got back from New York loaded with pictures of his Food Adventure and experience at the Hudson Hotel.

    Here’s a lil excerpt:

    “Jéan Downs: “Bloody. Facking delicious.”

Duck Breast with Soy Spaetzle, Jicama and Pickled Ramp
Duck was cooked to a perfect medium doneness. What really brought this dish alive was the sauce. Acidic, spicy and rich – excellent.”

Sharing my Favorite Blogs and Blog Posts

bookmarks.pngSo I’ve started this new blog and I’m suppose to share my observations of what I see and have seen on the internet. I’m going to share some of the best blog posts I’ve actually bookmarked before starting this blog, so if it comes off pretty random, you’re right – it is!

WomensPersonalFinance.net: 46 Things I wish My Mom Taught Me About Money
I forgot how I found this blog, but when I started my business in 2006, I wanted to make sure that I did everything I could to make the most of the money I earned, either through mutual funds, savings accounts, playing the market and real estate. It’s a great blog that I’ve passed on to many of my friends and family who have just graduated from school and want to take the “right” first step towards financial independence.

    TheCoolHunter.net / MocoLoco.com
I posted a picture that I found earlier from thecoolhunter and that’s just a taste of what else you can find on this site. MocoLoco is more a modern contemporary blog site that just highlights some of the very best of modern contemporary from all over the world. I like different things. That’s just my personality and even though both of these sites aren’t updated on a daily basis, I do go back and visit them at least once a week.

Experienced People – 101 Ways to Make Money Online
I found this blog through digg.com and thought it was just a very interesting read. I didn’t have time to go through the whole 101 ways on the first day of reading it, so I bookmarked it and it has been in my folder ever since. Lucky for them as now they’ve made it onto my blog!

SEOPedia.org – 101 Web Marketing Ideas and Tips
A colleague of mine referred me over to this blog late last year and I thought it was an excellent post. Even though I work on a lot of marketing projects, a refresher course like this kind of lets you step back and look at the broader picture of the campaign to see if you can take a different approach. It’s a great tool to use if you know you’re set in your ways and you need to change up the pace a little, but just don’t know quite how.

    Apartment Therapy
The typical bachelor usually lives in a apartment with blank white walls, an ikea desk, a stanky couch and a tv plopped on top of a cardboard box, so that’s why I am thankful for apartmenttherapy.com. This site has been a favorite of mine for a couple of years now because of the simple tips they provide on how to spruce up your place (to impress the ladies, ya know?) One great feature of the site is that it caters to specific cities – New York, Chicago, San Francisco & Los Angeles – as each city has it’s own culture tastes.

    room.png

Yes, I did everything myself – paint, fixtures, hung the frames and arranged the lights. It was a proud day. Also, AT (as they like to call themselves) has a section where they find great deals on furniture on Craigslist.org and post them, so you don’t have to go searching for them yourself.

Samantha Power – “Why Can’t We?”
I have to admit, I didn’t find this blog through digg or through a friend or through someone else’s blog. I heard Samantha Power speak at my friend’s Santa Clara Law School graduation ceremony. To be honest with you, I’m not a big fan of graduation speeches, especially from Guest Speakers who usually deliver the same type of speeches. Once the speech started, i secretly plugged into my ipod to listen to the latest TWIT podcast, but in a silent moment between Dvorak’s emotional outbursts and Leo’s on the fence commentary, I heard something that caught my attention – laughter! This wasn’t your typical graduation speech and this wasn’t your typical graduation speaker. So, I decided to pause the podcast and give Miss Power 2 minutes. Well, she took the 2 minutes to make me put put away my ipod for good that morning.

Thanks for these. I am going to further research the 101 ways… article and also the how to decorate in LA site. I could use a little extra interior design knowledge.

    MyBlogLog has Great Customer Service

mybloglog.pngI started a blog – Agloco 101 – last month after reading John Chow’s blog for a couple of months and finally wanting to join the Agloco craze. While I was laying down the foundation of my marketing campaign, I signed up for a MyBlogLog account and thought that I should use a screenname that could help me promote my blog, so I creatively chose “Agloco101.”

Genius, huh? Yes, I regretted it right after signing up for it, but I was already getting some love from other blogs, so I thought “eh, why not?”

Today, I realized that as I start to grow my MrGaryLee blog more, I want to visit other fellow bloggers without them having the preconception that I’m going to hard sell them on Agloco. So, I first tried creating a new account on MyBlogLog, but then just got too lazy to transfer all the information all to the new account. So, then I took my shot in the dark and emailed MyBlogLog to change my ScreenName, thinking there’s no way in the world they would allow this request to go through.

To my surprise, “Eric” from MyBlogLog emails me back and lets me know that my name has been changed to MrGaryLee. Now I can go and visit other blogs without having to worry about anything, but my ugly picture.

I just wanted to share and let people know that not ALL customer service people suck.

    • Nathan Drach 6.50 am on 21.02.2007 Permalink

Joined a while back to, just to check things out. Just using my personal site for now as I don’t do much blog marketing, just content sites. Seems to add some traffic, not the golden bullet that some say it is.

    • Jonathan-C. Phillips 12.38 am on 23.02.2007 Permalink

You are right, not all customer service rep suck! :)

I’ve been one for some years, and i think i was doing a good job! (well, i surely learned a lot)

Nice blog you have by the way! i’ll certainly be reading more of it!

I agree. Not all customer service are bad, even if one rep is bad, it doesn’t meant that the whole basket is full with bad eggs.

    John Chow’s Top 10 Blogging Mistakes – A Closer Look Pt. 3

Wow, I’ve been at this a relatively short time, but with the support of John Chow, I’ve been getting a great boost in hits the past few days due to his “Showing some community love” post. I just wanted to give thanks and hope everyone enjoys my posts. So, let’s get to this.

The final part in my series on John Chow’s Top Blogging Mistakes, I will take a look at the last 4 mistakes that most new bloggers make:

Mistake #7 – Not Giving a Full Feed RSS

There are two sides to the argument whether or not you should provide your full blog entries for your blog posts. One side tells you that you need to tease your RSS readers by giving them just a little taste of your blog so that you can get them to come visit your site in order to best monetize your content and to also improve your traffic stats. The other side which I subscribe to is that you provide your entire blog entry into your RSS Feeds, so that your readers can get what they originally signed up for – fast, easy access to your blog’s content. I agree that by providing a short tease in your RSS feed, you will probably increase your chances of monetizing your content, but I feel this is a real short-sighted way of looking at it and in a way, sort of shows that you don’t trust your content to get visitors to come visit your site.

I also wanted to point out that Douglass Karr of Indianapolis, Indiana has created a great wordpress plugin called PostPost that makes it extremely easy for you to monetize your RSS Feeds. The plugin gives you the option to add advertisements or what not before your post, after your post, before your feed loads or after your feed loads. I’ve tested and as you may have noticed, I am running it right now on the bottom of my posts and feeds and it seems to be working great. I’m predicting that this is going to crack a lot of Top 10 WordPress Plugins soon, including my upcoming one.

Mistake #8 – Not Reaching out to Other Bloggers

This is the one mistake that most new bloggers make. Remember, the biggest reason Google and other search engines emphasized the importance of links between sites is to help with the verification process. By exchanging links between two sites, it shows the search engines that the content on each site has enough quality to justify a link exchange. Thus, the more links a site has exchanged with other sites, the more search engines believe the quality of it’s contents, thereby increasing the rankings in search results.

So, with that little bit of Internet 101, the best thing for all bloggers to do is to think of ways to reach out to their readers and other bloggers by using one of the best tools given to the human race – friendly social skills! I hate to use John Chow’s blog as an example again, but there’s a reason he has been one of the fastest growing blogs on the internet. Here’s some of the things he does to reach out to other bloggers and readers:

    • Participates in the Comments Sections of his Posts
    • Keep to his word by offering a link exchange program based on Reviews
    • Reward Frequent Visitors to site with the very valuable links
    • Incorporating Contests where his prizes range from TV Tuners to Ink Pens

So, put on your happy hat and start some dialogue with your visitors, starting with me =)

Mistake #9 – Writing for Google instead of People

A lot of SEO books and classes will tell you that keyword density is the key to ranking a blog post faster, but what happens when you get those readers and they never come back to your blog? Well, that’s exactly what’s going to happen if you don’t write like a person who’s not trying to sell something to someone (that someone is Google if you needed to know). Repeating a word over and over and over and over and over again just gets really annoying, don’t you agree? (That was annoying just writing that out). Just focus on writing about the topic at hand and if you have competent writing skills, then your keyword density will take care of itself.

Mistake #10 – Not Reading John Chow dot com

    Well . . . . duh!

In case you missed it, here’s A Closer Look

    John Chow’s Top 10 Blogging Mistakes – A Closer Look Pt. 2

Hopefully you’ve been able to read what I wrote in the previous post about the first 3 mistakes and really think about why they are common mistakes. Also, as a reminder, I have gotten permission from John Chow himself to post this blog as it’s an analysis of his post. Here we go with a closer look at the next 3 mistakes:

Mistake #4 – Not Being Personal

Like John said, what’s the point of creating a blog if you’re not going to have a different take from what I can read on any one of those robotic-like websites? Give your blog a little personality and flair. Use pictures of yourself to give your readers a sense of who you are, so that your readers can put a face to your blog. Don’t be afraid to use your quirky sense of humor or nasty level of sarcasm. Also, an important thing to remember is to give your blog a makeover with unique color/font/layout combinations so that when people visit your blog, they know it’s YOUR blog!

    Mistake #5 – Being a Copycat

No matter what people say, a blog is a direct reflection of you and this is what makes your blog unique from any other blog on the net. Most blogs aren’t meant to report the news, most blogs are meants as a conduit to expressing your opinions about the news. For example, instead of just copying what John Chow had to say about Top 10 Blogging Mistakes, I decided to write a more in depth article about each point he had to make. The difference between this article and another article that just copies John’s list is that I’m offering my opinion on it. This is what makes my blog mine. So, when you’re writing your blog, the best advice that I’ve been given is to just write and not worry about grammar mistakes and/or spelling mistakes and/or run-on sentences. Just let your thoughts flow through your fingers, then after you are done, go back and clean it up. Your end result will be unique and something that people will want to read.

Mistake #6 – Not replying to comments

This is a pretty simple concept to grasp as we have all gone through experiences where we’ve been introduced to new people and if no one talks to us, we are more disinclined to want to go back to that group function. The same thing happens at a blog. If your readers have taken the time to introduce themselves and offer their opinions on your blog, the courteous thing to do is respond to their inquiry or greeting. It’s like the golden rule says – Treat Others as You would like to be treated! As your blog becomes more inviting, more readers will be inclined to start posting their thoughts – think snowball effect. Once this happens, your blog grows and a community is formed.

Tip – Here are two wordpress plugins that help increase your comments – Brian’s Threaded Comments & Top Commentator Plugin

    —————

In the next and final part 3 of this series, we will be finishing up with the last 4 Common Mistakes most bloggers make when starting their blogs.
