For My Aspiring Web Buddies - SearchStatus

Posted in Web Tips on February 27th, 2007

Since I do a lot of Traffic Buying from websites all over the place, I’ve always found it pain in the butt to have to always go back and forth between tabs to determine the page ranking and Alexa ranking of websites to better gauge their current and future traffic. So I was very pleased when I found the SearchStatus Firefox plugin, which shows the Page Rank and Alexa Ranking at the bottom of your browser along with a bunch of other great SEO research tools.

To answer some questions, I some of my aspiring web buddies will have:

Here’s the Google Definition of Page Ranking:

PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page’s value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves “important” weigh more heavily and help to make other pages “important.” Read More.

Usually measures on a scale between 1 and 10, it is also referred to as PR1-PR10. The higher the better. For example, my site has a current PageRank of 2 and I will attribute that to it’s relatively young age, which is one of the reasons for the low amount of content and low amount of links coming to this site. You will always want to link to sites that have a PageRank. Sites that have a PR0 still need to work on their content before they can really start justifying a fair link exchange.

Alexa is NOT the be all/end all of Website Rankings, so if you see 1,347,340 next to your Alexa Rank, don’t just give up and think your website is done. Alexa rankings are based on the web surfing patterns of people who have installed the Alexa toolbar into their browsers, so it is a very small sample of the entire internet population. They take into account - how many sites are linked to your site, how many page views your site gets, how far of a reach your website has and also they look at how often your site is updated. With that being the case, it does have nice graphs and numbers for you to look at, but remember to keep it in perspective and use other sites that you know are popular (youtube, myspace, yahoo, facebook) to gauge where you are ranked.

Now that you know a little bit more about the power of a link exchange, why not get a link up on Mr. Gary Lee with my Link Exchange Program or just with a shoutout on your blog! You’ll be linking to a PR2 (soon to be higher, trust me:)) and 135,217th Ranked Blog on Technorati.com
