My first blog entry via iPhone

After watching the craziness that was the iPhone launch day, I did’t think I would be getting an iPhone for another four weeks after ordeing it on apple.com. Before i went to sleep last night, i went to most of the big apple forums to get my fix. I learned that the local apple store here in pasadena still had a few more left, so i decided that i would just wake up early and get there when they open at 9pm.

As i exited the parking garage and turned the corner, i was surprised to see that there were already 25-30 people waiting in line. I asked the lady in front of me how fast the line was moving and she said that it was moving pretty fast. At the same time, the store manager came out to check the line, so i asked him if I should have anything to worry about. He smiled and told me that I shouldn’t have anything to worry about.

Once I got to the cashier, I was just only going to get one 8gb iPhone, but the stock guys who brought out the last boxes whispered to the manager that they only have 15 left in the back, so instead of just getting one, i got two to hopefully resale on craigslist or ebay. Yes, iknow its evil, but i could get a pratically free iphone if i sell it for a good price, especially since i checked the iphone inventory and it seems every Apple store is now sold out!

It didnt take me too long to activate and transfer my old ipod stuff over. I’ve been messing with it for most of the day and so far it’s everything i expected and this keyboard types unbelievably well.

What do you think of the iPhone? Are there any questions you have? Do you have any tips?

I thought that you couldn’t get an iPhone without a 2-year contract. How did you get a second one?

you can buy two and do whatever you want, but the only way to use any of the iphone features is to activate the phone through the carrier

I purchased an iPod but absolutely hate iTunes.

I guess the primary reason why I hate iTunes is because I can not use it. iTunes can not be installed on my laptop either because it belongs to my employer. (I would need to get approval from the IT department) Since I use the laptop about 95% of the time, this was a big disappointment.

For some reason, I had assumed you could just drag and drop files too and from the iPod the way you can with a USB thumb drive.

I learned today that it’s the same thing with the iPhone… The sales person said that I at least meed Windows XP & iTunes, but I only have 2,000 on my computer at home and can’t get iTunes installed at work. I also explained my frustration with my iPod needing to interface with iTunes and the clerk recommended that I should not purchase an iPhone because I would not be able to use most of the features and might not even be able to activate it.

Oh Well… I’m sure someone will come out with something similar that runs FireFox, has bradband capabilities and does not require the user to install software to perform the very most basic of functions like activating the device and transferring files to various computers.

Was I misinformed? Is iTunes a fundamental requirement for iPhone usage? Is it true that you can not perform basic functions like transfer files to and from a computer without the need to install software?

Nice. My phone source offered me an iPhone (unlocked…BTW. :D) about a month ago but after thinking about it, I declined since most of the stuff won’t work in Canada…where data plans are crazy expensive.

I think it would unlocked insofar that you get to use the voice services with another network (i.e., use another SIM). Many of the features — like visual voicemail — are probably AT&T-only. You can probably still use the Google map and HTML web browser, but data costs an arm and a leg in Canada. Like Ed, I’ve also seen a couple of unlocked iPhones for about $1300 or so. Something like that.

That’s so cool Gary! How about an official review? I have been seeing a lot of “Top xx Reasons Why The iPhone Sucks” lists lately, it would be nice to hear an unbiased review!

Nice job getting an iPhone bro! Im a big phone buyer, but I’ve been satisfied with my BlackJack and none of the iPhones features except its sleekness have really sold me out on it.

I have been holding out on the iphone. I read tons of stuff BEFORE the release about the second generation. SHOULD I wait, or Am I waiting for nothing? I am dying to get one. I have been staying clear of the Mac store and the AT&T store just because I know I won’t be able to stop myself.
Are all the reviews good so far? I had to stop checking after the first day, because I was still green with envy!
Maybe I can win the iphone from your site..
