One of the biggest changes I’ve made for 2007 is to do my part in reducing the effects of Global Warming. After years of driving rice rockets (straight piped of course) and a large SUV and now a smaller SUV, I felt the need to reduce my driving where I can, even if it does cost me a few extra more minutes of sleep. For you cost cutters, here are the costs before taking the train and after taking the train:
Before the Taking the Train:
- Monthly Parking in Downtown LA - $175
- Monthly Gas - $120
After taking the Train
- 16 Round Trips * $2.50/Round Trip - $37.50
- 4 Trips into Office with Car $8.50/Day - $34
- Monthly Gas - $60
Some other costs that I have to probably consider is waking up half and hour earlier to get in at the same time and also planning my week ahead so I know when I need my car with me in case I would like to meet up with friends or run errands. Since I try to look at both sides of the coin before making a decision, let me take a look at benefits that I can’t measure either - not having to fight traffic (big plus), having time to learn a new language (Mandarin) with the help of my iPod, observing the diversity of Los Angeles and having time to actually sit down and read a book.
So taking a look at the before and after, I’m looking to save about $163.50 a month for a total of $1,962 in 2007, decrease my stress from less traffic, learn a new language and finish a lot more books than last year. Although I didn’t make any real resolutions for 2007, I’d say that taking the train to LA is a great way to sticking to any you might have!
