After trying to get my roommate to start a blog about her international traveling experiences and failing, she pointed me out to a story she read in the Friday Edition of the Los Angeles Times about the ethics of making money through blogging.

The story centers around PayPerPost and the “Posties” that are making boatloads of money from it. On one side are the bloggers who support the ideas of sponsored posts as it helps provide a secondary income. For others like Jason Calacanis, CEO of Weblogs, he pretty much lays it all down with this quote:

“PayPerPost versus authentic bloggin is like comparing prostitution with making love to someone you care for deeply.”

Both sides have valid points and I think just like with many things in life, there just needs to be a balance that has to be struck. I remember reading a blog by Michael Kwan last week about “SellOut Bloggers” who posts ONLY PayPerPost blogs and he also mentions the need for balance. Full disclosures of revenue sources and notifications that ensure readers know that what they’re reading are sponsored posts is a great way to start the balancing process.

Check out the Article. It’s a really well written piece by Josh Friedman of the LA Times.
