Why Desktop Computers Suck!

Posted in Observations on March 31st, 2007

Today I was working on my iMac at home when all the of the sudden the power goes out. For those of you who don’t, there were some major wind action here in Southern California this past week, so the power crews have been working all over the place to fix broken lines. Of course as most power crews do, the crossed the wrong wire and my power was out for 5 minutes. During those 5 minutes, I looked around my dark room and realized that the only thing on was my laptop.

Now, why hasn’t anyone incorporated a battery backup system into desktops yet? This prevents your computer from shutting down suddenly due to instances like a power failure and gives you enough time to backup what you need to back before shutting down. I’m not asking for a 2-3 hour battery. Just something that lasts long enough where I can backup whatever I was working on.

Is this too much to ask?

Don’t they have those UPS boxes you can plug your desktop into ? I don’t know too many details about them, I just remember there used to be one on my computer at work a few years ago. In case the power went down, it would kick in and would last for an hour or so.
I know that’s not incorporated, but it’s still a solution to the problem :)

As desktops consume more power than a laptop, the batteries have to be a bit larger. A cheap UPS option would work.

It probably has something to do with weight/size and the amount of heat it must generate.

I lost power last night in the middle of a blog post but luckily the new Firefox is capable of restoring lost sessions. This has inspired me to be on the lookout for a UPS that will last for at least 15 minutes.

But, I do feel your pain.

I think that is a great idea, I’m a college student and I don’t know how many times I have lost papers I was working on because of a power outage. I have thought about getting a laptop because of this, but I’m poor so I can’t yet.
